A great example from the all-star game of how a quick-thinking goalie can start a counterattack. No annotations to the video (none seemed necessary) and the replays (which I included) focus more on the shot and save (rightly so) than the start to the attack, but notice how Neuer…
- …sees the play before it happens; he anticipates the counterattack and then actually makes it happen with his distribution;
- …delivers an accurate and effective (if unorthodox) pass to start the counter; without the accuracy of the pass, the counter doesn’t happen
And of course, the Bayern passing continues the counter and allows the shot to happen, but without the keeper starting it all off it never happens.
