Square Defending Drill [Dick Bate; Soccer Champions Coaches’ Clinic]

  1. Set up a square of cones of about 10-15 yards with a cone in the middle.
  2. On each side (and the video below only illustrates one side, but it would be going on on all four sides), on the outside of the cones place two passers and on the inside of the cones place a defender.
  3. The passers pass back and forth as the defender follows the ball.
  4. The cone in the middle represents the imaginary target player for the passers. The defender’s job is to cut off the pass (that doesn’t happen) to that central cone / player.
